This is a brief demonstration of how to write interactional scripts, as a tool for analysing the meanings in a conversation or similar interaction. It suggests a step-by-step approach, taking as an example the various forms of greetings that can be used in Australian English (AusE). Scripts like these can be written to model the interactional meanings within a specific conversation, or at the broader level of a speech act or speech event. They can also show some of what motivates speakers’ choices between different ways of saying similar things, as in this example where there are several different possible greeting forms, reflecting slightly different conversational strategies.
