Substance Use Disorders

Substance use disorders are common comorbidities among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and are associated with more severe symptoms and impaired functioning. Many such patients with dual diagnoses use multiple substances, potentially leading to an even greater degree of clinical and therapeutic complexity. Despite evidence suggesting that polysubstance use is increasing, outcome research to date has primarily focused on patients with a single substance use disorder, primarily alcohol, opiate, or stimulant use disorders. However, some recent studies suggest that compared to a single substance use disorder, use of multiple substances is associated with additional medical and psychiatric comorbidities as well as a greater risk of homelessness,

legal problems, and other manifestations of social dysfunction
