Your questions/observations can be about the PMI organization (its history, purpose, etc.), about the structure of the PMBOK, about the project management field in general, the project manager role, or anything else relevant to the understanding of the project management “body of knowledge” as a foundation for this course as it emphasizes effective Human Resource, Communication, and Stakeholder Management practices.

In addition, share your initial thoughts on how you will:

  • Develop a plan for personal preparation to sit for one of the two exams.
  • Identify barriers and challenges to successful project team execution and establish appropriate mitigation strategies.

Put yourself in the position of a project management consultant to a project manager faced with building a virtual team. List 2-3 challenges that you would expect that project manager to face, and outline a plan for facing the problems the PM should anticipate in terms of the team formation, development, and performance principles that you have been studying.

  • After reviewing the DMIS mindsets, try to place yourself in one of the six mindsets described the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Bennett, 2014). Then respond to the case below from the perspective of the mindset you have chosen. Do not answer the questions from your own perspective, but try to role play a mindset that is different from yours. Also, try to pick a variety of mindsets (as a class) so that the class does not end up talking about the same one or two mindsets all week.

Place the name of the Mindset you are role playing (e.g. “Denial”) in the subject line of your response and address the following scenario:

The Case:

You have been assigned as the Project Manager for a recently launched U.S. resourced project that will implement a new I.T. system into the United States and Japan. The new system will require both process and behavioral change to be successful.

  • How would you react?
  • What initial steps would you take?
  • Who would you include in discussions?
  • How would you launch the project?
  • How would you approach your customers in the U.S. and Japan?
  • How would you handle differences in needs of the two groups of customers?
  • How would you handle conflict or changes?

Be aware that it is very easy to slip into answering these questions the way you think and not how the Mindset you are role playing would think. Therefore, proofread your response before submitting to make sure you did not fall into this trap. The value of this exercise is much greater if you force yourself to think like others think.

 

  •  “Distributed Teams” and “Virtual Teams” are terms used to describe the unique dilemma faced by teams that are separated by distance and time. These teams frequently use online technologies to collaborate and communicate. For this discussion question, research and share a tool or best practice that can be used to bridge the gaps of geography, time, and culture that are faced by these teams.
