INTERPRETIVE ESSAY 1 INSTRUCTIONS

After completing the reading for this module/week, you are to write a 1200-word (minimum) interpretive essay on the problem of the identity of Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14. The essay must survey the major views on the identity of the child and then explain and defend your view on this issue. You must defend your view by examining the historical background of the passage, the larger context and details of Isaiah 7–9, the meaning of almah in 7:14, and the use of Isaiah 7:14 in Matthew 1 (and Matthew’s other “fulfillment” passages). You must interact with the details of the articles connected with this assignment and footnote when the articles are cited or quoted. You may use commentaries and other sources in writing this essay. Biblical references must be placed in parentheses within the body of the paper and must not be footnoted. Avoid long quotations from your sources and do your own original work.

The paper must be double-spaced with 1-inch margins all around, must be written in 12-point Times New Roman font, and must include a bibliography of sources used. You must use headings for the major sections of the paper as in formal term papers.
