Intro:

  • State why immigration is an important topic.
  • Give a fact about immigration from Spanish-speaking countries.
  • State how Americans view these new Americans.
  • Give a fact or two how you know this.
  • Provide the thesis statement with three main ideas:  immigration has an effect on the personal power to purchase goods,
  • an effect on the local community, an effect on the global community.

Paragraph 2:  Think about how immigration has an effect on the personal power to purchase goods (the first of the controls from the thesis statement);

The person has the ability to have a home/apartment in the new country.

The person can look for a home near jobs

The person can pay for food (something that doesn’t always happen in other countries)

The person can buy local goods for the family

The standard of living increases at home.

The family then can have cash to buy durable goods (appliances, auto, etc.)

Paragraph 3: Think about how immigration has an effect on the local community (the second of the controls from the thesis statement)

Not only can the family members buy goods to better their lives, but they also contribute in many ways to the local community.

They purchase goods sold to help local markets

They begin to establish social networks

They participate in civic affairs (church, community groups)

They may purchase a home, establishing their permanence

They continue to use their home language, adding to diversity

They may introduce new foods

They may create restaurants where immigrants and non-immigrants frequent

Paragraph 4:  immigration has an effect on the global community (the third and last control of the thesis statement)

The new immigrants create and establish community links in the US as well as abroad

They may send money home, allowing home country members to purchase goods.

Those at “home” may be able to afford food and other goods

The people at “home” may be able to visit the US

The immigrants travel back “home,” and utilize international travel

The immigrants learn English and may bring English and US culture to the “home”

The cultural and economic exchange may foster better international understanding.

Paragraph 5:  Wrap it up

Review the main points of paragraphs 2, 3, and 4.  Summarize or analyze how immigration might have a future impact on diversity in the United States.  Mention one or two facts or conjectures about how immigration contributes to diversity.
