The objectives of this internship consist of providing technical support to I-Care Staff and Users of the State registry. Responsibilities consist of the processing of emails from Medical providers trying to obtain access to the State Registry to the general public requesting Immunization records.  In addition, to the distribution of patient immunization records from the State Registry. With the onset of COVID 19, and the Immunization section playing critical role in the State’s response. Interns responsibilities have expanded, and now include assisting ICARE staff with the enrollment of new users into ICARE. Users access to ICARE plays a critical role for providers that are trying to obtain the COVID-19 vaccines. The career goal for this internship is for an intern to gain real world experience at public health agency. Her internship happened to come during a global pandemic, and the experiences she will gain from this time should be important for her overall professional growth.

Intern’s day to day activities consist of the processing of emails from Medical providers trying to obtain access to the State Registry to the general public requesting Immunization records.

Gain more knowledge about the immunization program and the Vaccine for Children program VFC, as well the different funding sources utilized for those doses. Comparing vaccine allocation and administrations at both a regional and a Statewide level. This comparison will help with determining the coverage level within a geographical region.

 

  1. Planning & Management to Promote Health

 

Design and learn population-based intervention like immunization conducted by IDPH.  Besides keeping track of the immunizations, a child has already received, I-CARE forecasts immunization due dates based on the nationally recognized “Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule.” These recommendations are approved by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Add on to that ICARE staff Remind and notify patients o due dates, record and notify patient contraindications, adverse reactions and any immunities.

 

  1. Policy in Public Health

 

According to CDC and State law of Illinois also requires certain immunizations for children and adults enrolled in childcare, school and college. ICARE collaboratively help school nurses and other healthcare providers to maintain the immunization records as per CDC and Illinois state law

 

  1. Leadership

 

Intern has shown her leadership skills while working collaboratively within a four-member staff. Her duties have expanded with the state response to COVID-19 Mass vaccination Plan. The core staff consist of herself, her supervisor and other two ICARE senior staff members. Intern continues to show her leadership skills by taking on new task and getting them completed in a timely manner. With the expansion of her responsibilities she continues to show her leadership skills when it comes to completing tasks and maintaining a level of professionalism while doing in spite of the many challenges the Immunization face with this COVID response.

 

Intern will set up the new user request (Web Portal registration) in ICARE for nurses, physicians and healthcare providers

Address the needs and complete the requests by population of providing immunization records Communicate with audience/patients who is seeking to take access and get immunization records in the forms of emails and phone calls. Communication with ICARE staff on a day to day basis to maintain daily operations requirements are meet and completed in the most efficient manner.

 

  1. Interprofessional practice

 

Effectively assist and communicate with health care providers. Communicating with multiple health providers through email to assist with gaining access to ICARE.  Participate in the meetings and communicate effectively with the team members while weekly meetings as well as delivered work and maintaining daily work schedule.

 

Intern will collectively communicate with different health care providers including different clinics, pharmacies to maintain and deliver the electronic form of immunizations as well as calculating and reminding due dates about the patients
