Evaluating learning and teaching using 21st century pedagogy and technology changes Contemporary healthcare education generally will utilise different forms of technology.
Assessment task 3 Task Description
Evaluating learning and teaching using 21st century pedagogy and technology changes Contemporary healthcare education generally will utilise different forms of technology.
For this assessment task you need to incorporate a form of technology into your teaching and evaluation of learning. Select one of the following options for evaluation:
- Option one: Peer observation
- Option two: Self-reflection
Both approaches will require critical reflection using contemporary literature.
Option One: Peer observation incorporating technology Select a form of technology that you can implement into your teaching, invite a colleague/peer to evaluate your use of this form of teaching to provide feedback on your practice as an educator. During this process, you will need to write a reflective journal which is both descriptive and reflective. This journal is not submitted, rather it provides you with a foundation to capture your experience – something which is difficult to achieve retrospectively. Following this process, you will write a 2000-word essay that, firstly describes the peer observation process undertaken and how this informed your evaluation of teaching. Secondly, using your journal as a basis, you need to explore the role of technology or Page 7 CNA632 Learning and teaching in Healthcare Settings digital learning and the potential role in your teaching and learning – this should include a plan for the future and be informed by your evaluation.
This assessment task is your personal account of the peer observation process. The personal account should:
- Be written in the first person • Draw on your reflective journal • Evaluate and discuss the role of technology, explore how you could better utilise different forms of media to enhance your teaching. • Include a critical reflection upon the feedback you received • Incorporate scholarly literature related to peer observation as well as other related literature.
Option Two: Self-reflection of a presentation using your choice of technology Select a topic and develop a teaching episode using your choice of media/technology. You are encouraged to be creative. The purpose of this assessment is to be able to show how you will structure material to engage learners being creative with technology, and then evaluate your approach to teaching through self-reflection. The session does not need to be formally presented to an audience. However; • You should be able to deliver the session in a 5-10 minute timeframe (or equivalent). • Include question time would be additional to the allocated time. • You need to develop detailed speaker notes for the teaching session which are referenced. • The link to the teaching session should be able to be viewed by the marker. Submit a pdf file containing the speaker notes (if appropriate). • Include a critical reflection of your teaching/education. • You should support the teaching session by reference to appropriate literature throughout. You do not need to actually present the session to an audience (although of course, having developed them, you might choose to) and you do not have to record a verbal presentation for this assignment, though this is encouraged. For examples: Slide Page 8 CNA632 Learning and teaching in Healthcare Settings presentation (automated or for presentation), online quiz, selfdirected learning package, YouTube video, series of twitter broadcasts, Facebook posts, blog, simulation script, other forms of social media etc. (May need to discuss with lecturer/tutor to ensure you can meet the marking criteria). Further details regarding this assessment are available on the MyLO site for CNA632.
Assessment Criteria (Option 1 & 2) Measures Intended Learning Outcome: Criterion 1 Engages in peer observation and/or selfreflection by designing and implementing a process, followed by an analysis and evaluation.
Criterion 2 Education package/media is engaging in its design and content. Critically reflects on the value and impact of the process on your thinking in relation to learning and teaching (now and into the future utilising technology) Criterion 3 Demonstrates engagement with the literature by incorporating material from the modules and extended reading.
Criterion 3 Writes clearly and succinctly in an appropriate academic style (presenting work in accordance with Presentation of Assignments guidelines) with correct referencing (Harvard Author-Date system in MyLO). Complies with required word count. Task length 2000 words
