The Director of Public Health is appointed by the board of health and is responsible for the leadership and management of a complex metropolitan public health department to assure the successful achievement of the department’s vision, mission, and program objectives. Note: All applications are subject to public disclosure.

The Public Health Department is here to protect, improve, and sustain the health and well-being of the city’s residents and visitors. The department promotes healthy living conditions through clean air, safe food, and reduced exposure to environmental health and safety hazards. We also provide important public health programs and partner with other community agencies to carry out its various grant and locally funded initiatives.

Typical Duties

· Directs a department of approximately 500 employees in 5 bureaus and multisector service delivery partnerships, including government departments, community health centers, hospitals, and a broad range of community-based organizations.

· Provides leadership and public health expertise needed to deliver essential services of public health within a variety of settings

· Ensures compliance with a broad range of regulations and policies.

· Participates in multi-faceted community health projects, and ensures provision of culturally competent information and assistance to individuals, families, and groups.

· Leads the department’s major presentations on budget and policy to the city council and the Board of Health.

· Enforces public health statutes of the state and county, enforces federal public health requirements, and asserts independent authority to act as necessary in order to maintain a state of health.

· Promotes the highest standards for interpersonal relations, including effective listening skills, emotional intelligence, teamwork, negotiation, and problem solving.

· Engages in the legislative process and policy decision making, including work with elected officials and the general public, which may have divergent opinions and perspectives.

· Administrates and oversees the budgetary process, including policy and related information.

· Understands and actively participates in a broad range of health issues as they pertain to diverse populations.

· Organizes and presents complex material in a clear, concise, and accurate manner; effectively expresses ideas verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

· A doctor of medicine certified for practice as such by the state board of medical examiners.

· Licensed medical degree from an accredited medical school with a current U.S. medical license.

· Ability to obtain state licensure within 6 months of employment.

· Ten years of experience in the active profession of medicine and/or public health practice administration.

· Commitment to devote entire time to the duties of this office.
