Criminal Profiling Paper

The final class paper has some rules and you should focus on these when doing your project.
1. Written in a senior level criminology student style. Grammar, spelling and organization
are critical. Up to 40 points off if poorly written.
2. Use of subheadings to identify the parts of the profile is essential. 40 points off if not
used in all places.
3. At least five parts – intro, three subareas and conclusion are required. 40 points off if not
done. The appendix/chart does not count – it is only to organize your arguments.
4. Double spaced.
5. I expect this document to be about 4 to 5 pages of text, not a lot of extra spaces. 40
points off if short.
6. Use a title page and no running headers at the top of each page. 25 points off if not done
or added running headers present.
7. By deadline listed in moodle. No ifs ands or buts. I will add 15 points for early
submission by December 10 at 11:59 p.m.
8. No bullet points allowed, write your ideas out in text – 100 points off if bullet points
Remember we are looking at five types of profiles:
Diagnos8c Evalua8ons – a.k.a. DE – a profiling term used to identify the work of
psychologists and psychiatrists.
Criminal Inves8ga8ve Analysis (CIA) – or the FBI method that moves beyond individual
analysis and towards more systematic research.
Inves8ga8ve psychology – IP – based on stats and experiential psychology methods.
Geographic profiling – Geo or GP
*****Behavioral Evidence Analysis – BEA – a deductive model, most recent type of profile,
based on work of Brent Turvey.
Forensic evidence + victimology + crime scene characteristics = recognizable
behavior patterns = offender characteristics.
