Initial Reaction

At first, I was disturbed by this painting and wondered what the painter had at the back of his mind when he started painting this scene. I was startled by the canvas and I did question whether it conformed to the standards of taste, owing to its unconcealed sexuality. I also was uncertain of how to interpret it for I did not know what Fuseli intended to convey through this portrait of sexually charged woman lying prone across her bed and a demon squatting ominously over her body. It left me wondering if the woman had faint from rapture. The portrait focuses on a beautiful woman lying prone across her bed with her limp arm hanging down. A ghostly demon, which is believed in medieval period to sexually prey on……….
